DLMS XML Available Now

DLA Logistics Management Standards Office has provided XML support since September 9, 2003. XML is a simple and flexible information exchange format that is well suited to support web-enabled business applications. XML is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data within the Department of Defense (DoD). DLA Logistics Management Standards Office has developed XML schemas for the full range of DLMS Supplements. Our XML schemas are W3C compliant and created using the EDIFECS SpecBuilder tool. This is to ensure our XML schemas equate to the DLMS ANSI ASC X12 IC/Supplements, which can be accessed from our DLMS Supplement page (DoD Common Access Card (CAC) or Enterprise Certificate Authority (ECA) certificate subscribed to by DLA is required to access the schemas.) Translation and backward compatibility is handled by the DLA Tranbsaction Services. The DoD Components are pushing forward to ensure 100% DLMS compliance to support OSD initiatives such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Item Unique Identification (IUID). DLA Transaction Services has developed the maps necessary to translate Military Standard (MILS)/Defense Logistics Standard Systems (DLSS) to DLMS X12 (EDI) / DLMS XML or to translate DLMS EDI/XML to MILS/DLSS.

DLMS and the Business Transformation Agency

The DLMS XML capitalizes on the existing data standards and maintains interoperability with legacy systems but DLMS compliance is necessary to support RFID and IUID and is a requirement of the BTA’s Investment Review Board (IRB). The BTA requires DLMS compliance before any system will pass certification by the IRB. DLMSO is working with the Service’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to ensure compliance and a smooth implementation. As of May 2009, over 50% of all transactions going into and out of DLA Transaction Services are DLMS while the long-range plan calls for the complete abandonment of the Defense Logistics Supply Systems (DLSS) transaction processing formerly called MILS. More information about DLMS can be found in the DLMS training slides.

Open for Business

The DLMS are XML capable and ready for use. The Air Force selected and implemented XML in their ERP system and the Navy is actively working on DLMS XML for their ERP. Which one is right for your ERP? Only you can answer that question.
